Alessandro Di Pietro born in 1987 in Messina, ItalyArtist Statement: My artistic practice focuses on processes of normalization and deviation from the standardized and the canonical. The works develop a two-directions exploration: they look backward at the emergence of the XIX century debate on monstrosity and anomalies in both human and animal anatomy, while leaping forward towards possible articulations of such discourse, through the creation of environments and performative objectual procedures. My practice explores how nowadays the representation of otherness and monstrosity could be considered a utopia, within a contemporary reality where everything is indexed and hyper-normalized.My methodological approach sources linguistic structures and cinematographic grammar, outlining strategies that generate new realities through narrative environments. Throughout the research for my most recent projects I have engaged with an approach to architecture through its relationship with the language of installation. The sculptures inhabit such spaces, designed as possible locations for film shooting or plausible hyperrealistic habitats, where the documentation always fails against the individual performative experience of the viewer.
